Together, We Are Champions for Children in Poughkeepsie City Schools

Community Awareness Message from the Superintendent of Schools

Posted Date: 10/28/25 (4:21 PM)

Dear Poughkeepsie City School District Community,

In light of a recent incident involving a Poughkeepsie High School student who was approached and physically accosted while on her way to school, we want to express our deep concern and care for the student involved. We are grateful that the student stood up for herself and took agency over her own safety, allowing her to get away safely and quickly report what happened.

We also extend our sincere thanks to the Good Samaritan who stepped in to offer support during the situation.

This incident serves as an important reminder for all of us to have ongoing conversations with our children about personal safety when traveling to and from school. Please encourage them to:

  • Walk with friends whenever possible.

  • Stay alert and aware of their surroundings.

  • Report any suspicious behavior to an adult, school staff member, or the police immediately.

I will be following up with our building principals to explore ways we can bring discussions about personal safety and situational awareness into our schools. We continue to work in partnership with the Poughkeepsie Police Department and will maintain a visible presence around our schools to help ensure the safety and security of all students.

Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our students safe, supported, and cared for.

Yours in Education,
Gregory D. Mott
